Art and Design

Head of Department: Ástþór Ragnarsson and Helga Guðrún Helgadóttir

The Art and Design studies will give students a broad based knowledge of art and design which enable students to pursue studies at a higher level or provide a sound base of knowledge to continue producing their own art work.

This programme is for students wanting a career in the visual arts or design who have not yet chosen their particular professional direction. It is also good for students preparing for entry to degree or specialist programmes in the art and design field. Students are introduced to practices and concepts of contemporary art and design. They engage in elective studies in graphic design, spatial design and visual arts. Elective studies are designed to assist students to make informed decisions about their future directions in either further study or employment. The primary goal is to provide a sound basis for subsequent undergraduate studies. Students who complete the programme will have received a comprehensive basic art and design education and qualifications that meet the entry requirements to graduate programmes in art and design.

The study of design has always aimed at providing students with opportunities to use their skills and creativity. Students are enabled to make use of the workshops facilities in order to produce their prototypes. The study is seen as a good preparation for further study in design. The main goal is to provide the industries in Iceland with qualified graduates from The Technical College of Hafnarfjörður.

Display Design

Display and window dressers need to know how to assemble props and displays to attract customers’ attention. They also have to know about different art techniques and materials, and fashion trends. They should be artistic, creative and able to inspire confidence in their clients. They should also be practical, able to follow instructions and able to accept criticism. Display and window dressers should also be friendly and outgoing.

The study of display design takes four terms to finish and consists of general subjects (28 credits) and practical subjects (57 credits).

The study of display design aims at qualifying students in demonstrating practical skills in display design merchandising.
